The Coinage Act of 1849 was passed by Congress to authorize the U.S. Mint to begin minting $20 gold coins. Because the coin was worth twice as much as the $10 gold eagle, this new coin became known as the double eagle, and became America’s largest circulating gold coin. These coins measure 34 mm in diameter and contain 0.9675 ounce of actual gold weight, in an alloy of 90% gold and 10% copper. Its gold content of 0.9675 troy oz (30.0926 grams) was worth $20 at the 1849 official price of $20.67/oz.). The coin features a profile of Lady Liberty wearing an elaborate coronet on the obverse, and on the reverse the eagle with a motto ribbon on each side. Coin dates will be random, and vary between 1850-1907.
